While chemical companies have made billions selling us products to clean our home and yard, more and more people are turning to more natural cleaning and maintaining options. There are many natural and safe products out there that work just as well as harsh chemicals, but won't harm the environment.

When grass is green and healthy, it improves the look of the exterior of your home, not to mention absorbing carbon dioxide and the sounds of traffic. However, keeping it green can mean using many different pesticides and chemical-laden fertilizers, as well as the amount of water needed for the lawn. You can avoid having to use many of these products and reduce water use if you plant grass that is native to your geographic region. This is both a greener and less expensive choice for your lawn.

There are many beautiful water features that you might have in your yard, such as a fountain, a koi pond or perhaps a simple bird bath. While these are attractive, the water does need to be maintained because dirty water is harmful for wildlife and attracts unwelcome pests such as mosquitoes. Consider using a Health Ponds product to keep the water clean. Products from this company use a mix of natural, safe and effective bacteria to keep water fresh, rather than relying on any type of chemical.

You can use the Koi Pond Cleaner to remove and lessen the effect of koi pond algae, as well as keeping water clean. Each product, such as the birdbath cleaner or fountain cleaner, includes a plastic floating dispenser in which you place a pack of bacteria. This bacteria is slowly and steadily released into the water over the course of a month. The ingredients have been approved by veterinarians and are safe for humans and all wildlife.

Inside your home, there are many completely safe and natural items that you can use to clean just about anything. Best of all, you can make many cleaning solutions yourself using very inexpensive ingredients. So not only will you avoid chemicals, you save money at the same time.

All you need are some spray bottles, water and a few other ingredients. Window cleaner can be made using a spray bottle filled with a bit of lemon juice and club soda or a bottle with vinegar and water. A regular surface and toilet cleaner can be made with a couple of cups of water, a teaspoon or so of natural soap and about 15 drops of essential oil, such as tea tree oil.
