Liven Up Your Garden With These Handy Tips.

By Johnathan Black

Gardening is a hobby that many people find enjoyable. Gardeners get to try their hand at creativity and nurturing, as they raise plants from their early stages as little seedlings to prize flowers and crop bearing plants. If you would like to learn more about gardening, then read the following article.

Be sure to water your garden daily. Without daily water, your garden may quickly turn sour. If the idea of pulling out a hose daily is too much for you to stomach, consider installing some sort of sprinkler system. There is a cost, but it can save a lot of headaches and actually pay for itself via a healthy crop!

Use natural mulches in flower beds. The mulch effectively suppresses the growth of weeds while adding essential nutrients to the garden. The mulch also aids in water retention, so you do not have to water your flowers as much. Additionally, a mulched flower bed or garden is very aesthetic.

A trick to help measure in the garden is to take one of the long handled garden tools like a shovel and mark on its handle using a tape measure. Using a permanent marker, mark out the feet and inches on its handle and when specific distance is required in planing, have a handy measuring device is close at hand.

If you are not a fan of wearing gloves when gardening but still hate dirty fingernails, try scraping your fingernails in a bar of soap prior to beginning. The soap will keep soil from entering underneath your nails, plus the soap will help keep your nails from cracking or breaking.

A great tip to consider in regards to gardening is that you always want to choose your own made fertilizer instead of store bought chemical fertilizer whenever possible. This is important because you will save a ton of money and you also keep chemicals out of your garden that may cause damage in the long run.

If weeds appear in your mulch, it usually means that you skimped and you should add more to the mulch that is there. If you are getting snails and slugs in your mulch, the best advice is to put down landscape fabric on the ground first, then add the mulch on top. This method means that you don't have to add as much mulch to cover the base of the plant.

As you have seen, gardening has various techniques, but they all share the same goal; to have a beautiful garden. All it takes to start your garden is some research, dedication, and patience to use the tools, seeds, and other gardening equipment to help your garden grow successfully.

Gardening Tips You Should Make Note Of

By Johnathan Black

In the gardening world, it is important to to try to grow and maintain the best plants that you can. That is where smart gardening techniques come in handy. This will help you grow the most plentiful, beautiful and healthiest plants that you can. Follow these tips to become a better gardener.

When deciding to plant a garden, it is important to survey the areas available for planting and determine which will be the best location. Whether you grow your fruits and vegetables in your yard, on your patio in containers, or on your apartment balcony, your plants should be in a location which is exposed to sunlight. To yield the best harvest, most crops need to be situated in an area which is an open location that is sunny.

Alfalfa meal can be a great fertilizer for many gardens. This is a natural fertilizer, and can be readily purchased at most health food stores. It provides essential nutrients to your plants, while letting you avoid harmful chemicals. Apply the alfalfa meal directly over your soil. Reapply after any heavy rain falls.

While most of the fruits of your labor and the fruits of your trees, will actually show up in specific seasons, this doesn't mean that all of the work is done in those seasons. Gardening has tasks to do all year round so be sure that you are ready for this kind of commitment.

The time to plant lily bulbs are in the spring so that they will be well-established by winter. However, you will find many varieties of lily bulbs in garden centers in the fall. If you opt to plant lily bulbs in the fall, be sure to mulch heavily at least six inches on top with hardwood mulch or straw to protect them from cold winter freezes.

A great tip to consider in regards to gardening is to make sure that you detach your hose from any outside water outlets when the weather starts to get cold. This is important so that you do not cause any damage to your hose or outlet due to freezing water.

Any garden and gardener can benefit from these tips, whether your ideal garden is huge or tiny, whether you prefer flowers or vegetables, whether you like exotic plants or native plants. With this advice in your gardening tool shed, your gardening skills might improve so much that all your gardener friends will want to know your secrets.

Getting Rid of Unwanted Water Can Be Draining!

By Keith Klamer

Because water and mud can do serious and costly damage to real estate, proper drainage is essential in protecting homes and buildings from water intrusion. Whether it's due to rain water, lawn irrigation, or soil erosion, if property owners notice standing pools of water near their structures, it is vital they either fix an existing drainage system or install a completely new one.

Drainage issues can cause problems under homes in crawl spaces or basements, doing harm to the concrete footing and underground walls. In certain situations, it can even force inside basement walls to bow in due to the high pressure caused by subterranean water pushing in from outside. Water infiltration like this is hard to stop because the ultimate source of the water is almost impossible to locate.

If you've noticed water pooling outside your home, you'll want to install a french drain. This will not only carry away the water, but it will also help prevent water damage to your home.

Typically installed immediately adjacent to an exterior wall, a french drain should be positioned at the lowest point on your property. But french drains can be put in somewhere else in the yard or property if the unwanted water is not directly next to your buildings. The output for a french drain can be almost anywhere as long as it terminates at a location that will not let the water flow back towards your house. If gravity is allowed to work, the water will flow naturally through the french drain and out to the street.

A french drainage system is not buried too far underground. But because these types of drains use gravity to move water away, it's vital they be positioned on a downward slope of about an inch for every linear foot toward the street. In some cases, this may require some further digging to make sure there is enough of a downward slant.

In short, French drains create a subterranean channel to move water from one area to a lower one.

In some situations, french drains may be installed around the perimeter of the home. The drainage set-up ultimately flows out to the street and the city sewer system through pvc pipe and curb-cuts underneath the sidewalk.
